The Courage to Tell My Stories

"We are the only ones who can tell our stories, because we are the ones who have lived them." -- Susan Witting Albert
I've been thinking a lot lately about telling my story. It takes courage, sure, but also I have to wonder Does anyone care? Does anyone care to read it? What makes my story worth writing or reading about? Others go through a lot too. Does it seem vain to write about the things that have, and are, affecting me?

No matter what, I will write for myself. In a journal, to process and to heal and to think "in ink."

But, in this way? What is the calling for this blog? Is it only to offer thoughts on writing and journaling? Only to hope to inspire? Or do I dare write about the personal, too.

I've read other bloggers say that they don't care if people comment or not, that they're blogging for themselves, and no other audience. I'm not. I already write for myself, in a journal. If I'm going to write here, I want to know that people are reading, and if you're reading, I want to hear your thoughts.

What do you think? When are our stories worth telling? What makes them worth sharing?

  1. Personal is up to you...blogs are very public. You do have listeners who love you and care, but there also may be those who don't and who may comment negatively. Be prepared for that...and consider your reasons for baring your soul publicly. If the purpose is to bring people together or minister to others, then I say...good or bad...the consequences may be worth it.

  2. It takes courage to open up to others. To make yourself vulnerable. To be real. To be authentic. I just learned this weekend a bit more about courage.... pick one word you are fearful of, and then pick one word that is your passion. What steps do you need to take to go from Fear to Passion? ...and remember you have faith and you have fear and one will always replace to other. Best of luck in what you decide. :)

  3. Well, I care a whole heap. I'm interested in things about you I didn't know about because it helps me understand you better and sometimes understand myself better. I'm interested in things you've experienced in which I was there, because your perspective means a great deal to me, and I learn a lot from what you say about events. I also learn from HOW you say what you say, because it gives me a concrete example of writing tools that I can use for my own narrative.

I think part of what makes a story worth sharing is if the writer cares about it. Passionate experience translates, whether a grievous trial or a glorious bit of life.

I don't know how to get people to talk back though. I would holler for comments for you, if I could!

  4. Keep writing! I have nothing profound to say - only that you should strive to do things that make you happy - and if sharing your thoughts with the world by writing a blog makes you happy then, by all means - keep doing it!

  5. My reasons for reading your blog aren't deep and profound - they are a bit selfish. I feel like this keeps us connected. It has been many years since we have seen each other, and by reading here I feel like I get to "see" you. You are my friend, and I care about your thoughts, feelings, and all the daily events - big and small. Therefore . . . I think you should continue! :-)

  7. Hi Jenn,
I've started this comment several times, but keep getting interrupted before I get to post it =) So I'll keep it short - I do appreciate your stories. Hearing about your loss has helped me in understanding and relating to other friends going through similar pain. Thank you for sharing.
